MICKEY'S STORY

HUNT TESTS

Mickey earned the first leg toward his AKC Junior Hunter title at the Madison Retriever Club on June 14, 1998. Mickey's first pass was accomplished at the tender age of 6.5 months.

Mickey passed two back to back JH tests held at the Lake Country Retriever Club in Prior Lake, MN June 27 and 28, 1998. He and his sister, Punkin, were the youngest dogs at the test. They both made the tests look easy. Mickey titled out at the Fox Valley Retriever Club test July 25, 1998. Mickey achieved the Junior Hunter title at 7 months of age.

Mickey and I began running AKC Senior Hunt tests April of 1999, finishing his SH title at the Madison Retriever Club on June 12, while only 18 months old. He earned his senior title in less than two months with four straight passes.

Mickey earned a qualifying ribbon at his first Master Hunt Test at the Wisconsin Amateur Field Trial Club, Horicon WI on September 25, 1999. His first Master pass occurred while Mickey was only 21 months of age. Mickey began the 2000 hunt test season by earning his second Master leg at the Golden Retriever Club of Illinois test in early May and followed up with another pass at the Manitowoc County Kennel Club test in late May. Click to view this. I refused to run any additional master tests that summer because of poor line manners. I felt Mick needed a little more maturity before continuing so we spent the year training, running field trials and pheasant hunting but no hunt tests. After all, at this time he was just two years old. It was during this time that he jammed his first licensed field trial Qualifying trial, only the second we had entered.
We began the next season with style. Mickey finished up his Master Hunter title by passing at the Wisconsin Amateur Field Trial test in May, 2001 and added another insurance leg at the Island View Kennel Club test in June. Mickey is a MASTER HUNTER (MH).

Here is a picture of both boys at a recent test. Mickey is on my right shoulder, the larger of the two dogs.

FIELD TRIALS

In December of 1998, competing against mostly older dogs, Mickey JAMed his first derby, the Manitowoc County Kennel Club Sanctioned Winter Field Trial at the tender age of 13 months. The next sanctioned trial we ran was the Wisconsin Amateur Field Trial Club sanctioned trial in April 2000. Mickey was awarded first place in the Qualifying stake. Then, in 2000 Mickey JAMed the Manitowoc Co. KC field trial Qualifying stake. This was only the second ever licensed Qual we had run. In the 2001 season we got back to the field trials and ran several. Mickey received a JAM at the WisAm field trial in August and followed that up with a second place finish at Watopa Field Trial Club (Eau Claire,WI) in September. With the Watopa placement, Mickey becomes ALL AGE QUALIFIED (QAA). We followed this up with a 2nd place finish at the December, 2001 sanctioned trial at Manitowoc County KC. This finished out an outstandingly successful 2001 season (CDX, MH, QAA, 2 placements and a JAM)

OBEDIENCE

NOVICE:

Mickey began his obedience career by scoring 195/200 in back to back trials on April 8 and 9, 2000 at the Wisconsin Rapids Kennel Club. These scores were good enough to earn him fourth and second place finishes at these trials as well as the High Labrador in Trial award. Mickey finished his obedience CD title at the April 22 Fond du Lac Kennel Club show with a score of 192. His average for the three legs was 194, along with two placements and a high in trial award. An insurance leg was added June 17 at the Winnebago Labrador Retriever Club specialty. Showing in Novice B Mickey did his best work yet, scoring a 196. He also won an award for High Scoring Dog with a Field Title. What a way to finish is Novice career! His average for the four Novice legs was 194.5, along with three placements (second, third and fourth) one high scoring field titled dog and one high Labrador in trial award. Mickey finished up his Novice obedience career as the 25th out of 443 Labs in the United States earning Novice Obedience Titles in year 2000, per Labrador Quarterly statistics.
OPEN
Mickey's Open work was almost as impressive as his novice career. Mickey qualified in three successive obedience trials, (Wisconsin Rapids KC, Rand Park Kennel Club, Sheboygan Kennel Club) culminating with his CDX title at the Sheboygan Kennel Club test in June, 2001. His scores were again in the 190s range at all shows. His individual scores were: RPDTC= 193; WRKC= 194 and second place; SKC=195 and third place. Thus, Mickey finished his Open obedience work with an average score of 194 and two placements (2nd and 3rd)
UTILITY
The Utility class is the third level and most elite of AKC obedience. Mickey began his Utility career in his usual fashion, with a flourish. He earned his first leg at the Jan 13,2002 Oshkosh Kennel Club trial. Mickey was the ONLY dog of 28 to pass the Utility A class at this two-day trial, thus earning a 1ST PLACE blue ribbon.
Mickey picked up his second leg toward the Utility degree at Rand Park DTC, Chicago, on March 10, 2002. In a large class of 36 dogs, only 6 qualified. Mickey's work was good enough to pick up yet another FIRST PLACE with a score of 188.5. Two legs down and one to go.....

I am happy to report that we picked up the third and final leg in Utility April 7 at the Wisconsin Rapids KC obedience show. Mickey qualified, took FIRST PLACE yet again and won awards for high lab in Utility as well as high lab in trial.
Mickey is a UD dog, earning the title with three blue ribbons (1st placement)!!

In the fall of 2002, Mickey and I began the quest for the top AKC obedience title, UDX. The UDX title requires ten legs, a leg being a qualification in both Open B and Utility B at the same show. To date (Feb 2), we have picked up eight of the ten required legs toward the title. Mickey has qualified at the Kenosha KC (Sept 8), Lakeland DTC on Sept 22, Western Waukesha KC show (Oct, 2002), Oshkosh KC shows Jan 8 and 9, Janesville/Beloit KC (Jan 26) and Timberidge Agility Club of Central Wisconsin, Feb 1 and 2, 2003.
As an update, Mickey qualified in all four classes at the Greater Racine Kennel Club shows the weekend of March 22-23, picking up legs 9 and 10 and finally earning the title. Mickey qualified in 10 of 13 shows, or 20 of 26 classes. Not bad for an intact male field dog. Many people show that many times to earn the three legs needed for the UD title.

POINTING LABS:

In the fall/winter of 2001-02, we began a completely new type of training, upland pointing. This was totally different for us but, since Mickey is from strong pointing lab lines and had been so successful at other venues, we decided to try yet another skill. At the March 16 APLA test in Joy, IL, Mickey easily passed the certification level test for the title of CP (Certified Pointer). At the fall APLA test in Davis City, IA, Mickey excelled on both his retrieving and upland work and earned the title of Master Pointing Retriever (MPR). Two weeks later we competed at the Roberts, IL test and had another nice run. We passed and earned the coveted title of GMPR (Grand Master Pointing Retriever). Mickey joins a select group of Grand Master pointing labs.
To my knowledge, Mickey is the only Qualified All Age Grand Master Pointer east of the Rockies, certainly the only one amateur trained and handled. Without doubt, he is the only Grand Master in the country with the top obedience title of Utility Dog Excellent (UDX).

TSA PUPPY PROGRAM

Mickey was recently chosen to be a sire, or sperm donor, for the U.S. government's TSA Puppy Program.  The Transportation Safety Administration Puppy Program selectively breeds, whelps, raises and prepares puppies to be future explosive detection dogs within the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program.  The type of dog chosen for this program is one that has outstanding drive to retrieve, a dog cleared of known heritable problems, a dog that can work undistracted in a busy environment, and a dog that can make the transition from work to rest phase easily.  Mickey's unique combination of field, pointing and obedience titles made him an ideal candidate for this important national safety program. It is an honor to have Mickey chosen as a sire for this program.

Here are some new pictures of Mickey, taken in Spring and Summer,2002; photography courtesy of Tony Drake.
Mickey with his tongue out, as usual
Mickey 14 pointing. These pics were taken with tons of distraction. This is reflected in the less than intense point characteristic for him.  However, note the three-legged stance he assumed on his point.

One last picture of Mickey in profile, his breeders favorite pic of him.  Finally, I love this picture of a recent litter of "Little Micksters."
